Donations for Ixcamilpa villages

A large part of Paco´s trip to the Ixcamilpa villages was dedicated to distributing donations to this area of great need, to in this way show God´s love and open opportunities to reiterate the Gospel message.  Many people were impacted!

-Don Sabas (blind from diabetes)- literally cried in gratitude upon receiving the 10 boxes of home dialysis treatment Paco had found on
sale, saying he had just been given another month of life!

-Doña Reyna- had been asking around the village for clothes for her grandchildren in need just this last month.  When Paco heard, he left the bags of donated clothing with her- and she excited separated children´s outfits for school, home, cold weather… and well as clothes for her whole family. She also promised to distribute the
remaining articles to other families in need in the village.

-Oliva, a nurse in the village, was especially thankful for the donations of medicines, saying her sick father desperately needed analgesics.  She even gave Paco homemade cookies in thanks!  She also promised to distribute the other medications to others with specific needs in the area

-Paco visited the village elementary school (1 teacher for 27 students in one classroom with 6 grade levels!) to deliver a bag of grains to each child to take to his home.  While there, he talked
with the teacher about needs for the school, and hopes to bring the white board markers, big academic posters (multiplication tables, alphabet, etc.), and a pressure cooker that the school currently needs on his next trip.

-On his way out of the region, Paco stopped by the county seat of Ixcamilpa to visit Pastor Domingo and his wife Liovi, of the only church in the county.  He left groceries and
grains for the church brothers, as well as donations of Bibles and children´s Gospel booklets.  There were brothers in their tiny congregation who have never had a Bible!  And the tiny church does not have a children´s ministry for lack of materials.  Pastor Domingo and his wife were so thankful!  Domingo already has someone in mind to give a Bible: a town drunk has been seeking him out to hear about God, and he wanted a
Bible to give to him.

Return to Ixcamilpa!

After his long absence from the Mixteca region of Puebla (due to our son, Asher´s, birth and our daughter, Jemina´s, serious illness), Paco once again experienced the Lord´s presence and power on his trip to Ixcamilpa.

The night before the trip, the two brothers who had committed to join him at 5am the following morning, cancelled- at 9:30pm! Paco did not have anyone to join him into the
isolated, no-cell-phone service, no medical-care area!  He started calling brothers from the church.  When he called Toño to invite him, Toño immediately accepted: saying that with the recent “Day of the Dead” celebrations in Mexico he was missing his deceased wife more than usual, and needed a distraction.  The trip was a tremendous blessing for this fairly-new believer! Toño marveled to witness multiple families who, even in
their poverty, continued to pray, read their Bibles and trust in God.  Toño commented in amazement: “They really believe God hears them when they pray!”  He returned challenged in his own faith. Obviously, the Lord had good reasons for Paco´s other companions to cancel just hours before the trip!

The villagers were excited to see Paco arrive after his long absence, waving
at him as he drove into town (after first peering suspiciously at our new car, as the villages have had recent drug sellers filtering in).  Paco and Toño visited many homes to not only deliver donated groceries and grains but to also pray for the people and encourage them in their faith.  Each family insisted they stay for a “meal” of tortillas and salsa, in their gratitude.

Paco was especially pleased to visit Don Chava (blind) and his wife Selerina- who continue to listen to their audio Bible daily (Chava has lost count of how many times he has heard the New Testament!).  Chava commented that in the past months he has woken a night a few times claiming to have heard Paco´s voice calling him. Obviously, Paco wasn’t there, but he took it as a sign and reminder to turn on his Bible.

They visited the elderly María´s home, where he had coordinated and paid for the placement of a cement floor in her poor home. She and her adult son were so, so thankful for the floor! They could not understand why someone without political agenda would want to help them! Paco had the chance again to share the Gospel of grace of Jesus Christ.

At the afternoon Bible study in the village auditorium, two teenagers and 2 children arrived for the first time (having just arrived to live at the village a month ago- too late to join the school year).  They were attentive the entire study. When Paco offered them Bibles of their own,
they excitedly received them, saying they had never heard the Bible before and wanted to read it.

Instead of staying to sleep in the village auditorium as usual after Bible study, they instead slept under a tree in Don Miguel´s patio in Cuatlaxtecoma (heeding the advice of the locals to avoid the public areas at night with the recent drug trafficking in the area).  However, they were woken at all hours
of the night by chicken flapping in the branches above them and rooster crows!

Preparations for Ixcamilpa ministry trip

A trip to the Mixteca region of Puebla always requires at least a couple days of preparation: donations of clothing are collected from believers and then separated by age/sex, grains and groceries are purchased in bulk at the large market, goods are separated into individual donation bags, special gifts and Bibles are purchased, and the car is carefully loaded.  This trip we were thankful for donations of clothing from many brothers in both congregations,
as well as a donation of both clothing and medicines from a Christian bookstore in Puebla City.

One special gift that was purchased for this trip were 10 boxes of home dialysis treatment that Paco found on sale- remembering people in the village in dialysis.
Jemina was Paco´s “helper” to separate and organize donations before leaving.

Churches Unite for special Sunday Worship

Our church plant group invited our home church family for a united Sunday service of worship and fellowship; so wonderful for Paco and me to have both our special church families together!

We rented a venue near our church plant for the event.  The combined worship bands, the Lord’s supper in community, the potluck fellowship afterwards: all very sweet. We were
blessed when David, a man in our congregation battling with cancer, shared his testimony of God’s presence in his life.

The Lord obviously had plans to use our united worship service because three new families joined us!  We are thankful that they could hear God’s Word taught and experience His church.

We were especially burdened for one family- whose precious 4-year-old daughter, Odalys, has cancer, and has been in treatment for the past year.  Talking with her mother, Gaby, and her aunt, Mayte, about their experiences and struggles brought tears to my eyes, not to
mention watching Odalys receive medication during the service and meal following.  We are praying for this little girl and her family in great need of God’s healing, peace and sovereign control.

Discipleship Teacher Training Sessions

Not only does Operation Christmas Child equip and train local churches to share the Gospel, the ministry also equips and trains believers as children’s Bible teachers!  After the children around Mexico hear the Gospel and receive their shoebox gift, each church invites them to classes where they can study the Bible.
Our regional OCC team has held 4 all-day training sessions around the state so far to train these future teachers.

At each session, we familiarize the teachers with their teacher discipleship guide books, demonstrate a sample children’s class, allow opportunities for them to practice sharing the
Gospel of salvation, and share ideas on how to motivate and celebrate the children with a graduation.

We have double the number to teachers to train this year in order to be prepared to disciple double the number of children (as our region is receiving two truckloads of shoeboxes instead of just one). Already, we have trained over 400 teachers!  Though, our faith is not in our training sessions
but rather in the presence of the Holy Spirit in each teacher to use them with power to testify of Jesus Christ!

Our “NEW” Car!!

Our 2000 Toyota minivan had been through many ministry adventures to many places and with many (many) people and lots of cargo.  However, this year it was in the mechanic at least every month suffering the problems of an old, very used vehicle.  However, it wasn´t until the car broke down on route to the hospital for our baby Asher´s birth that we really accepted that we needed a newer car.

The Lord obviously knew our need because we saw a 2012 Honda Pilot for sale in a parking lot during our weekly grocery shopping this month.  Upon investigation, the model seemed perfect for us: seats 8 people (so important as we are always moving people with ministry), and SUV-style (studier build and higher clearance for bad Mexican roads), only 6 cylinder (trying to save on super-expensive Mexican gas), and fits baby car-seats
side-by-side (now that we are parents of two little ones). Even more amazing was that the owner had all its vehicle maintenance up to date (with evidence!)- preventative car care is not Mexican culture as much as in the USA.

We praise the Lord for the provision of this vehicle for our family and ministry!!

Prayer Meetings for Operation Christmas Child

Prayer is the base of every step of the Operation Christmas Child ministry.  Throughout the year, we hold multiple prayer meetings where the participating churches can come pray with us for their shoebox evangelism events, for the children and their families, for the safe arrival of the materials, and more…

So far this season, we have held two large prayer meetings, in the cities of
Apizaco and Tlaxcala City.  We always love to witness brothers of many different denominations all holding hands and praying to our same God, each in their own prayer styles: a beautiful example of the Church!  We know our Creator and Savior God hears us and responds (And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1John 5:15), and we await His mighty work this Operation Christmas
Child season in all of Mexico!

Start of Evangelism Classes

Our small church plant was inspired and challenged after our recent street evangelism outing to be more intentional in our one-on-one evangelism efforts in our community.  However, most of the brothers confessed to not feeling prepared to share the Gospel with others on the street.  The answer: classes in evangelism!
Using the “Living Waters” evangelism course, Paco started a Bible-centered
class with questions and practice scenarios on Sunday afternoons.  We love the response from the brothers who are attending!  One even admitted that just after two classes his whole view of evangelism, and even the Gospel, have changed- being redirected by the Bible!  Wow!  (We highly recommend Living Waters “Way of the Master” evangelism course! Very Biblical)
We have already had another evangelism outing, and will be continuing to do so regularly throughout the evangelism course. And, we wait to see the miracles of the Lord- how He will continue to give eternal life to those of our community  who hear and respond to the Gospel!

New Children at Kids´ Bible Club!

After our evangelism outing on Sunday, four of the children that had heard and accepted the Gospel joined our kids´ Bible club that following Friday!  The four are sisters and brother from humble means ranging in age from 7-13 years old.  Though shy at first, they soon participated openly and excitedly in the class.  They obviously felt comfortable because they even arrived for Sunday worship service that week!  We still have not
met their parents- they attend on their own each week.  Paco is reminded of how he and his siblings started attending church at a young age without their parents as well.  Since their first class, they have now brought some of their cousins and friends to kids´ club as well!  We praise the Lord for His work in their lives.
